"Touch is far more essential than our other senses. … It's ten times stronger than verbal or emotional contact."
— Saul Schanberg
We are delighted to welcome Emma Sheridan to BeWell for a weekend of learning in September.
Assists truly are an 'art'. Such guidance offers the Yoga practitioner an understanding of their expression of a pose or 'asana' on a deeper level. Deeper than words or mirroring can usually achieve.
About Assists
Yoga assists, often referred to as 'hands-on adjustments', play a vital role in enhancing the practice of yoga. They provide personalised guidance and support to Yoga practitioners. These gentle, thoughtful manipulations, administered by experienced instructors, aim to deepen poses, improve alignment, and promote safety during each asana.
By using tactile cues, a Yoga teacher can achieve multiple goals such as helping students explore their physical limitations
and encouraging students to lengthen their breath and stretch beyond their perceived boundaries.
This connection
-
fosters a greater awareness of body alignment
-
creates a deeper mind-body connection
-
leads to a more profound, transformative experience on the mat
Ultimately, yoga assists cultivate an environment of trust and support, allowing students to relax into their practice and discover their own potential for growth and self-discovery.
Hands On Adjustments Vrs Hands on Assists
In the practice of yoga, the terms "hands-on adjustments" and "hands-on assists" may sound similar, but they embody different energies and intentions. Hands-on adjustments typically involve a teacher making direct physical modifications to a student's posture, often with the primary goal of alignment and safety. This interaction can help the practitioner deepen their understanding of their body while also providing immediate feedback.
In contrast, hands-on assists are more attuned to the subtle energy flow between teacher and student. These assists encourage connection and awareness, inviting students to explore the energy within their practice. Instead of merely correcting a pose, the teacher uses their touch to enhance the student’s sense of body awareness and alignment through energy relationships, often encouraging them to anchor in their breath and grounding techniques. The essence of an assist lies in fostering an energetic dialogue—where both teacher and student engage in a shared journey of exploration and embodiment.

YACEP TRAINER
Emma discovered yoga in 2008 while living in London, where the fast-paced lifestyle left her feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and uninspired.
'Practicing yoga gave me a rare opportunity to slow down, connect with my body, and become introspective in a way I have never experienced before.'
Over time, the practice taught Emma how to have easier and steadier access to presence, awareness, intuition and self-connection. It sparked an inner shift that made her much happier, more peaceful, and more in touch with the love and wisdom at each of our core.
With a desire to live a healthy, purpose-filled life in service of something greater, Emma left London and embarked on her first teacher training in 2010 with Absolute Yoga in Thailand. Since then, she has led groups on transformative retreats to beautiful and exotic destinations, shared her expertise in rustic Yoga shalas in India and slick studios in South East Asia, and mentored teachers from all over the world.
Emma draws from current research, somatic meditation, tantric yoga philosophy, and the many inspirational teachers, guides and mentors she has met along the way, including highly regarded international teachers Julie Martin and Emil Wendell in India in 2014, in the hope she can offer meaningful learning experiences to her students.
Emma has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of yoga, as individuals from all walks of life overcome their limitations and become more compassionate, awake, and connected humans. Emma's passion for yoga and its transformative power is the reason she loves what she does and why she wants to share it with you.
In 2023, Emma opened her own Yoga Studio called 'Seomra Shanti' in Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim. Seomra Shanti is an offgrid Yoga space running weekly classes and day retreats inspired by nature, sustainability and the celtic calendar.
We are truly lucky to have Emma with us to deliver this training. Emma is not just any yoga teacher but a passionate yoga teacher, who has carved out her own slice of serenity with her off-grid yoga studio and home. Embracing the slow life, she intertwines her days with the natural rhythms of the earth, inviting students to explore not just the asanas, but a lifestyle rich in mindfulness and simplicity.
In 2024, Emma is spearheading a transformative shift in the yoga business landscape, illustrating that sustainability and wellness can flourish and co-exist hand in hand. Through organic gardens, solar-powered lighting, and an endless commitment to gentle living, her vision and studio is more than just a place to practice; it’s a living philosophy that embodies harmony with nature and self.
Students leave not only deeper in their practice but inspired to weave the tenets of off-grid life into their own journeys, embracing the profound connection that can arise when we slow down and return to our roots.
How fortunate are we to feel this energy poured into Emma's Art of Assists offering @ BeWell this September...
